Introduction: The dragon is a recurring and powerful motif in Iranian art iconography, yet it has often been superficially described merely as a demonic creature and a symbol of evil forces in mythology. This study aims to reinterpret and analyze the multiple meanings of the dragon symbol in Iranian art. The central research question is: Is the role of the dragon in Iranian art limited solely to the symbolism of evil, or does it carry broader, more diverse meanings? By challenging the one-sided, shame-centered view, this paper seeks to uncover the dynamic and multi-layered symbolic functions of the dragon across different cultural, religious, and artistic contexts.<br>Methods: To answer the research question, the present study adopted an analytical-descriptive method. Data were collected from two main sources: written historical and religious texts, and visual evidence from Iranian decorative arts. The analysis focused on examining the symbolic functions of the dragon motif in various domains, including ancient mythology, astronomical iconography, decorative patterns, and Islamic texts (particularly Quranic interpretations of the story of Moses). The study also considered the relationship between the dragon and the snake as its initial form, as well as the symbolic use of the “knot” as a magical or talismanic tool.<br>Findings: The findings indicate that the meaning of the dragon in Iranian art goes far beyond a one-sided symbol of evil, revealing diverse and even contradictory implications depending on the context:<br>- In ancient mythology, the snake – considered the initial form of the dragon – was a symbol of health and healing, not evil.<br>- In astronomical iconography, although the dragon itself is not a planet, it was used as a symbol to indicate specific cosmic situations, such as lunar or solar eclipses.<br>- In decorative motifs, the entanglement of the snake and dragon, especially when combined with the symbolic “knot” as a magical tool, carries talismanic and protective functions.<br>- In Islamic texts, particularly the Quranic interpretation of the story of Moses (PBUH), the dragon represents the manifestation of the rod of prophecy. In this context, it is depicted as a protective agent and a destroyer of evil and tyrannical forces.<br>Thus, the dragon simultaneously embodies opposing qualities: healing and danger, protection and destruction, cosmic order and chaos.<br>Conclusion: As a result, this study demonstrates that the role of the dragon in Iranian art is not static or unidimensional but rather a dynamic and multi-layered symbol. Its meanings shift in accordance with the cultural, religious, and artistic context in which it appears. Therefore, the dragon cannot be interpreted solely within the framework of a symbol of evil. This research contributes to a more nuanced understanding of Iranian iconography and invites further study of other similarly complex symbols in Persian visual culture.

Introduction: Traditional arts in different historical periods possess specific visual characteristics and principles of design and composition. Some principles are common across different periods and art forms, while certain characteristics receive more or less attention depending on the era or medium. The art of carpet illumination, design, and weaving was of great importance during the first half of the Safavid period, particularly in Tabriz, due to the support of kings for traditional arts and court patronage.<br>During this period, the application of the seven principles of Iranian design and composition reached its peak compared to earlier eras. Under Shah Tahmasp, various arts-including book layout and carpet weaving-flourished, resulting in masterpieces such as the Sheikh Safi Carpet and the Shahnameh of Tahmasp. The present study was formed with the following objectives: (1) identifying the visual and aesthetic characteristics of illumination in the Shahnameh of Tahmasp and the Sheikh Safi Carpet, and (2) identifying the differences and similarities in design principles and aesthetic characteristics between these two works.<br>The study seeks to answer two research questions:<br>1. What are the visual and aesthetic characteristics based on the design principles of Iranian art in the illumination of the Shahnameh of Tahmasp and the motifs of the Sheikh Safi Carpet?<br>2. What are the differences and similarities in the design principles and aesthetic characteristics between the illumination of the Shahnameh of Tahmasp and the motifs of the Sheikh Safi Carpet?<br>Methods: The research method is descriptive and comparative. Data collection was library-based; images and materials were gathered from books and internet sources. The research population consists of illuminated manuscripts and exquisite carpets produced in the early Safavid period (first half of the 10th century AH) during the reign of Shah Tahmasp. From the large number of manuscripts and carpets available, the Shahnameh of Tahmasp and the Sheikh Safi Carpet were selected as research samples due to their sophistication, simultaneity of creation, and status as artistic masterpieces. The method of data analysis was qualitative.<br>Findings: The findings indicate the application of integrated principles in the abstract motifs of art from this period, despite differences in the execution context of the two works.<br>Specifically:<br>- The seven principles of Iranian art, highly valued during the Safavid period, are evident in both works.<br>- Among the Islamic motifs, *Khatai*, *Niloufar* (lotus), and *Gereh* (knot) appear in both arts.<br>- All types of Islamic and Khatai motifs are designed and executed with elegance, detail, and precision in both works.<br>- The *Vaqh* (foliate) motif is not present in the Safavid carpet of Tabriz.<br>- The *Farangi* (European) motif has no place in either art.<br>- Principles of traditional design and aesthetics-such as balance, symmetry, rhythm, and color-are fully observed in both works, leading to final balance and unity.<br>- The observance of aesthetic principles is rooted in the beliefs of Sufism and Shiism. Due to the value placed by these traditions on perfection, beauty, and proportion, aesthetic principles were observed more rigorously than in previous periods.<br>Conclusion: Identifying the characteristics of Iranian art, especially during its peak period, provides a cultural foundation for its continuation and expansion in order to preserve cultural heritage. Since the two landmark works belong to one of the peak periods of Iranian art and were created contemporaneously-each possessing special characteristics that are recognized as masterpieces today-comparing their visual and aesthetic principles was necessary. Through this comparison, the special characteristics of each art form, as well as the common characteristics shared between them, have been identified. Thus, understanding the principles of design and aesthetics governing these works helps identify the correct and principled design path in both arts.<br>The results confirm that despite differences in material and execution context, the design principles and aesthetic values remain integrated and consistent with the seven principles of Iranian art. The influence of Sufi and Shiite beliefs further reinforced the application of beauty, proportion, and perfection in these masterpieces.

Introduction: The khānaqāh, as a sacred and multifunctional institution, has consistently played a fundamental role in organizing the socio-spatial order, transmitting mystical teachings, and representing the collective identity of Sufis. Among such institutions, the Khānaqāh of Ṣafī ʿAlī Shāh functioned not only as a gathering place for disciples and a site for performing spiritual rituals but also as a visual medium for expressing mystical worldview, affirming the spiritual legitimacy of the Sufi master, and ensuring the continuity of the Niʿmatullāhī Sufi order.<br>This study undertakes a comparative examination of the wall paintings and tilework motifs of the khānaqāh-mausoleum of Ṣafī ʿAlī Shāh in relation to his social, mystical, and spiritual status. It seeks to demonstrate how visual art in this commemorative monument reflects his personal conduct, stages of spiritual wayfaring, and social role as a Sufi master within the context of Qajar-era Sufism. Focusing on the semantics of tilework motifs and wall paintings in this complex, the article explores how the mystical lifestyle and spiritual path of Ṣafī ʿAlī Shāh are manifested in the selection of themes, symbols, poetic inscriptions, and human figures, and what factors influenced the formation of Qajar tilework motifs in mystical-funerary architecture.<br>The main objectives of the research are: first, to explain the reflection of Ṣafī ʿAlī Shāh’s mystical way of life in the visual art of his khānaqāh-mausoleum; and second, to identify the functions and formative factors of tilework motifs in Qajar-era mystical architectural monuments. The research questions are as follows: (1) How did the mystical lifestyle and spiritual path of Ṣafī ʿAlī Shāh influence the tilework motifs of his mausoleum? (2) What factors influenced Qajar tilework motifs in the context of mystical-funerary architecture?<br>Methods: A descriptive-analytical research method has been employed for this study. Data were collected through library research and inferential analysis. The research process involved examining Ṣafī ʿAlī Shāh’s lifestyle and his socio-mystical position among the Niʿmatullāhī dervishes, followed by a comparative analysis of these qualitative data with the visual motifs and poetic inscriptions found on the tiles of the khānaqāh-mausoleum. This comparative approach enabled a symbolic interpretation of the artworks and their relationship to the spiritual and social dimensions of the Sufi master.<br>Findings: The findings indicate that the paintings and tilework of the Khānaqāh of Ṣafī ʿAlī Shāh are not merely decorative elements but possess semantic, educational, and legitimizing functions. Concepts such as divine love, mystical ecstasy, annihilation (fanāʾ), spiritual authority (wilāyah), the master-disciple relationship, and esoteric knowledge are conveyed to the viewer through the simultaneous integration of imagery, poetry, and visual symbols. These motifs depict the various stages of Ṣafī ʿAlī Shāh’s spiritual journey-from seeking and love to gnosis and servitude-while also consolidating his socio-spiritual status as a Sufi master in the collective memory of his followers.<br>Conclusion: In conclusion, the visual art of the Khānaqāh of Ṣafī ʿAlī Shāh can be understood as a tangible reflection of the interconnection between Sufism, art, and the social structure of the Qajar period. The study demonstrates that the tilework and wall paintings served not only aesthetic purposes but also functioned as a didactic and symbolic medium for transmitting mystical teachings and legitimizing the master’s spiritual authority. This research offers deeper insight into the role of painting and tilework in conveying mystical experience and representing socio-spiritual identity in Iranian Sufi architectural spaces. Further study of similar monuments could expand our understanding of the relationship between visual culture and Sufi practice in the Qajar era.<br>Keywords: Khāneqāh; wall painting; Qajar tilework; mystical-funerary architecture; Safi ‘Ali-Shah’s mystical and spiritual conduct.

Introduction: This article addresses the persistent, yet under-theorized, tension between handicraft production and the institutional definitions of fine art. While handicraft objects occupy a central space in cultural heritage, they remain marginalized within aesthetic philosophy, often relegated to the realm of mere utility. This study bridges this research gap by critically evaluating whether three seminal aesthetic frameworks-Kantian transcendental idealism, Deweyan pragmatism, and Dickie’s institutional theory-can accommodate the ontological status of handicrafts.<br>Methods: This study employs a critical philosophical analysis of three major aesthetic frameworks. Each theory is examined on its own terms through close reading of primary and secondary sources. The evaluation criteria focus on whether each framework can logically and consistently classify handicraft objects as potential candidates for fine art status. Special attention is given to each theory’s treatment of utility, practical ends, aesthetic experience, and institutional recognition. Additionally, the study incorporates a case-based analysis using non-Western craft traditions, particularly Iranian handicrafts, to test the cross-cultural applicability of these Western-centric theories.<br>Findings: The analysis yields three principal findings. First, Kantian aesthetics, by prioritizing disinterestedness and the rejection of practical ends, inherently excludes handicrafts from the category of fine art, rendering them merely dependent appendages to architecture. Second, while Dewey’s notion of ‘aesthetic experience’ appears ostensibly inclusive, a closer critique reveals fundamental ambiguity: his framework ultimately fails to reconcile the practical, goal-oriented nature of craft with the ideal of beauty. Third, Dickie’s institutional theory, despite its apparent flexibility, relies on a sophisticated ‘artworld’ public that poses a structural barrier for non-Western craft traditions, such as those in Iran, which often lack formalized institutional support systems comparable to Western museums and galleries.<br>Conclusion: The article concludes that the exclusion of handicrafts from the art domain is not an ontological necessity but rather a limitation of the Eurocentric paradigms that dominate art theory. By highlighting these theoretical failures, the study offers a critical implication: the integration of handicrafts into the realm of art requires a fundamental expansion of current aesthetic theories-one that moves beyond the binary of ‘art vs. utility’ toward a more inclusive, practice-based conceptualization of the artwork. Future research should focus on constructing alternative theoretical models grounded in non-Western craft traditions themselves rather than forcing them into existing Eurocentric categories.

Introduction: Iranian carpets, beyond their undeniable visual beauty and technical sophistication, embody profound layers of symbolic meaning in which every motif, color, and compositional arrangement may be understood as a carrier of ancient beliefs, collective memory, and sacred concepts rooted in mythological consciousness. The present study raises the question of how the relatively forgotten Henna Flower motif found in carpets of the Arak region may be interpreted through the mythological perspectives of Mircea Eliade. More specifically, it asks whether this floral image should be viewed solely as an ornamental device, or whether it preserves deeper symbolic meanings connected to ancient Iranian conceptions of sacred life, fertility, protection, and cyclical renewal. The research hypothesis proposes that meaningful correspondences exist between Eliade’s notions of the sacred, creation, and eternal return, and the mythological beliefs of ancient Iran, and that these correspondences can be traced in motifs such as the Henna Flower. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to identify the mythic associations of the motif and to analyze its semantic structure through Eliade’s interpretive framework.<br>Methods: This research adopts a fundamental and interdisciplinary approach and employs a descriptive-analytical methodology. Data were gathered through library-based study of mythological, historical, and art-historical sources, alongside field investigations involving observation of extant Arak carpets, interviews with local weavers and collectors, and documentation of motif variations. Comparative visual analysis was also used to examine formal relationships between the Henna Flower motif and related floral symbols in broader Iranian decorative traditions. Such a methodology enables the motif to be studied simultaneously as an aesthetic form, a cultural sign, and a bearer of inherited meanings.<br>Results: The findings demonstrate that the Henna Flower motif contains multiple layers of mythological significance. First, it evokes the image of paradise or the ideal garden, a central theme in Iranian artistic imagination from antiquity onward. In Iranian thought, the ordered garden symbolizes abundance, divine blessing, and the restoration of cosmic harmony. The blooming floral motif, placed rhythmically across the carpet field, may thus be read as a visual rendering of paradisal space.<br>Second, the motif carries meanings associated with protection and guardianship. Henna itself has long been linked in Iranian folk customs to blessing, celebration, and apotropaic power, especially in rites of marriage, childbirth, and transition. Its transformation into a woven motif suggests continuity between ritual substance and symbolic image, whereby the carpet becomes a protective surface within domestic life.<br>Third, the motif conveys the concept of renewal and rebirth. As a flowering form associated with growth, seasonal return, and regeneration, it resonates strongly with Eliade’s theory of the repetition of creation-the idea that through recurring symbols and rituals, communities symbolically return to the sacred time of beginnings. Each repetition of the motif across the carpet field may therefore be interpreted as a rhythmic reenactment of life emerging anew.<br>Conclusion: The Henna Flower motif should not be regarded merely as a decorative embellishment within the carpets of Arak. Rather, it constitutes a mythological-symbolic structure through which ancient conceptions of paradise, blessing, protection, and cyclical regeneration continue to speak in visual form. Read through Eliade’s theory of myth and sacred manifestation, the motif reveals how traditional Iranian carpets function as sacred visual texts in which art, memory, and cosmology are inseparably woven together. The study of such motifs not only enriches carpet scholarship but also contributes to a broader understanding of how traditional arts preserve metaphysical meanings beneath their ornamental surfaces. Moreover, the findings emphasize the importance of regional carpet traditions such as those of Arak, whose lesser-known motifs deserve renewed scholarly attention as repositories of intangible cultural heritage.

Introduction: The Persian carpet is widely recognized as one of the most distinguished manifestations of art and craft within the sphere of Islamic civilization. With a history spanning several millennia, this cultural masterpiece has maintained an inseparable connection with the social and economic life of Iran, encompassing a broad range of production contexts-from nomadic tribal societies to royal court manufactories. Among the various regional and historical categories of Persian carpets, the‌Mehrabi‌(prayer niche) carpets of Tabriz from the Qajar period (1789–1925) hold a particularly significant position. These works are notable for their exceptional diversity in design structure and their innovative use of color. While preserving the symbolic and spiritual essence of the‌Mehrab-a niche indicating the direction of prayer-Tabriz weavers of the Qajar era simultaneously introduced novel compositional arrangements and creative chromatic solutions, thereby laying the groundwork for a distinct visual aesthetic in the carpet-weaving tradition of northwestern Iran.<br>During the Qajar period, Tabriz experienced rapid growth. Situated at the crossroads of East and West, the city became receptive to new ideas and, for nearly a century, functioned as one of the most advanced artistic and commercial centers of the old world, attracting numerous artists and craftsmen. The first traditional Iranian motifs, such as arabesques (Eslimi) and floral (Khatai) patterns, appeared on the carpets of northwestern Iran and Tabriz before being disseminated globally through the Isfahan school and Safavid court culture. In the late Qajar period, Tabriz was among the first cities where carpet trade flourished extensively, serving as a market for European companies. However, unlike many other weaving centers that lost their distinctive characteristics under foreign influence, Tabriz retained its essential qualities, including the desirability of its colors and the high quality of its weave. The pleasant, appealing colors of Iranian carpets, which embody the culture and art of the East along with the creative taste of the designer and weaver, are vividly expressed in diverse floral motifs and patterns.<br>The primary objective of this research is to analyze the structural design and chromatic composition of Tabriz‌Mehrabi‌carpets from the Qajar period. The central research question is: What are the defining structural and coloristic features of this specific category of carpets? To answer this question, four outstanding examples of Qajar Tabriz‌Mehrabi‌carpets, all preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London, were selected for detailed study.<br>Methods: This study employs a descriptive-analytical approach to investigate the four selected carpets. The sampling method was purposive (targeted), focusing on four well-preserved and historically significant‌Mehrabi‌carpets from Tabriz, securely attributed to the Qajar period and housed in the V&A’s permanent collection. Data collection was conducted through library-based methods, including the examination of textual sources-historical accounts, academic publications, and technical treatises on Persian carpets-as well as the study of high-resolution visual documents. The primary images of the carpets were obtained directly from the digital archives of the Victoria and Albert Museum.<br>For the analysis of design and color, graphic software tools were employed. The structural characteristics examined included the overall layout, symmetry, the specific form of the‌Mehrab‌(e.g., simple arched, pillared, with hanging lamps), the types of motifs used (such as‌gol-e-gard‌round flowers, crenellated leaves, and arabesque spirals), and their compositional arrangement. Chromatic analysis was performed using digital image processing techniques. Specifically, the KMeans clustering algorithm was applied to each carpet image to objectively identify the dominant color palette, quantify the number of distinct colors, and analyze their distribution across the field (matn), the‌Mehrab‌niche, and the borders. This method allowed for a systematic, reproducible comparison of color usage across the four samples, moving beyond purely subjective visual assessment.<br>Findings: The findings of this research indicate that the Qajar Tabriz‌Mehrabi‌carpets exhibit considerable diversity in design, encompassing a spectrum from relatively simple, unadorned structures to highly ornate, richly decorated compositions. The motifs employed across all four samples are integrative, combining floral and geometric elements, with a predominance of curved and broken (angular) forms. Common motifs identified include the round flower (gol-e-gard), crenellated (tooth-like) leaves, and spiraling arabesques (Eslimi).<br>The four carpets specifically represent the following design subtypes: (1) a pillared, vase-style‌Mehrab; (2) a simple‌Mehrab‌with pillars; (3) a flower-and-bush (Gol-o-Booteh)‌Mehrab; and (4) an arabesque (Eslimi)‌Mehrab. All four carpets share a vertical (approximately 1:2) structural layout. What distinguishes them from one another is not merely the presence of shared motifs, but the specific method of their composition, repetition, and placement within the overall design structure and, most importantly, the articulation of the‌Mehrab‌form itself. This ranges from simple arched niches with curved and triangular contours to highly decorated examples incorporating pillars and hanging ornamental lamps (Qandils).<br>Conclusion: The application of the KMeans clustering algorithm revealed that the number of distinct colors used in each carpet ranges from 7 to 15. A shared chromatic palette is identifiable across all four carpets, including deep indigo (sorme’i), lacquer red (laki), cream, brown, and green. The most significant finding is not the quantity of colors, but the qualitative manner of their juxtaposition and the preservation of a chromatic rhythm-a careful rotation of hues-among the field, the‌Mehrab‌niche, and the borders. The tonalities exhibit a noticeable patina, likely resulting from age, which paradoxically contributes to a unified, integrated chromatic harmony for each carpet. Different spatial zones are distinguished not through sharp, harsh contrasts, but through subtle, gentle tonal variations. In these carpets, color functions not merely as a decorative element but as an identity-conferring factor, delicately delineating the boundaries between the‌Mehrab, the field, and the borders.
