In this study, the visual content of twenty alphabet books from the 19800s onwards, selected by purposive random sampling, was analyzed based on Jean Piaget's cognitive development perspective and in a descriptive-analytical way. Data collection has been done using library sources with a qualitative method. The higher quality standard in illustration and printing, the selection of professional illustrators, the presence of more reliable publishers than other publishers, and the use and high sales of these books based on the number of reprints, have been the criteria for choosing them among the large number of alphabet books available in the market. The purpose of this research is to know the appropriate components of imagery in teaching the alphabet to children of the mentioned age group based on Piaget's cognitive development theory, The question being asked is what are the appropriate components in teaching the alphabet to these children based on that theory, and what is the suitable method and technique for visualizing the teaching of the Persian alphabet to children of that age group?
In Piaget's view, "play" and searching in the environment, exploratory activity, and creating a balance between the two processes of internalization and externalization have an essential role in learning, and "play" can be used as a suitable opportunity to teach, focus and practice different skills. By analyzing and criticizing the alphabetical illustrations based on the play, exploratory activity, and back-and-forth behaviors that are a subset of the play, as well as examining the quality of the illustration components in active learning, it was determined that a limited number of the alphabet illustrations are consistent with the cognitive development approach and the relevant image standards. Most illustration samples are at the average level and some are at the weak level. This indicates the existence of shortcomings in the educational illustration of the Persian alphabet and the lack of attention to the category of alphabet illustrations.
