[English]

This genealogical study traces visual representations of the West in the history of Iranian cinema before the 1979 Revolution. In doing so, it is mainly focused on different modes of subject positions projected on the scenes as multiple forms of Occidentalism(s). By focusing on six films, the article argues that Iranian cinema has articulated at least three ‘threshold subjects’ in narrating the west. Farangima’ab is the first subject position that the current study deals with. This threshold subject had been generated even before the genesis of cinema in Iran but still lived through in different forms on the screen as a positive figure, mostly as reminiscent of the prominent intellectuals of the Constitutional era. Fokli is the second threshold subject related to the West in the history of contemporary Iran which was a by-product of the dark and despairing years of early and mid-20th century Iran. Finally, a gentleman was the adjusted focal figure of the second half of 20th-century Iranian cinema.
